April 2020 Garden Report

April's stars of the garden are the Azaleas and Rhododendrons. Most have been great this year even though I heavily pruned some of the azaleas and they haven't bloomed. The good thing is that azaleas are tough plants and will pop out new shoots all along the bare sticks that I left.

That rhododendron above has a lot more blooms than last year. I have been cautiously pruning the rhododendrons to get rid of the dead wood and sprawling bare branches. I have also given them more water and mulch, but I haven't fertilized them yet.

I have labeled and catalogued most of the azaleas so that if I decide to transplant them out-of-bloom, I'll know what color they are. That way I can create a more pleasing tapestry of colors in the garden.

The lilac, snowballs, and dogwood all bloomed right on schedule. The dogwood seemed particularly beautiful this year. Maybe more sunshine from the tree thinning, or maybe more water?

The strawbale garden is doing well. We have several little squash, one tiny tomato, and lots of minuscule green beans.

We tried to create a neat arrangement, but it's so messy looking. And weeds! So many weeds from the straw and clover seeds that were in the bales. I hope to have raised boxes next year. Behind a fence.
