Fall Garden Report

We've been so busy with the remodeling that I neglected to post a Garden Report for August, September, October, and November. What a slacker!

As you can see above, we've started on the cupboard under the stairs the bedroom over the garage. New windows and some fresh paint outside so far.

The vegetable garden was perking right along up until about October when things started to look quite bedraggled. Then, just last week, the bales decomposed to the point where the whole thing fell over. And, I must admit, my enthusiasm for the garden waned a bit when the kitchen was finished. Seems all I wanted to do was cook. I even made two pumpkin pies from pumpkins we grew!

The azaleas and camellias are starting to bloom a bit now that it's getting cooler, while the roses are looking a little long in the tooth. The ferns continue to thrive, and the moss garden is doing well, but apparently it takes a long while for moss to fill a large space.

The big news this year is a GLUT of acorns. Last year we could hardly find any, but this year October was a dangerous time to be outside. The acorns were raining down, banging on the roof, bouncing on the street, and even bonking me on the head a few times! I know how Henny Penny felt when she said, "The sky is falling, the sky is falling!"

We even planted an oak tree in that new bed out by the driveway. Hopefully, we will live long enough to enjoy it. The ones we planted across the street (23 years ago) are good sized now, so I'm thinking we will.

Some of the acorns are already sprouting and I've been raking them up as fast as I can, but I'm sure I'll have thousands of tiny oak trees to dig up next spring.

The Japanese maples were beautiful this fall. The dogwood turned brown before it even got a chance to turn orange; too bad, because it was great last year.

We've found many mushrooms in the gardens this year too. Probably because we cut down several trees last year and their roots are finally rotting.

We built a fence out by the new driveway. It will have roses spilling over it and perennials in front of it. Also a few herbs for sharing with the neighbors.
